Contaminated Seafood Crisis: The Nation Faces Pollution in Major Manufacturing Area

A significant industrial complex situated on the outskirts of Jakarta is addressing radioactive contamination after a government taskforce detected traces of the dangerous element Caesium-137 at 22 production plants within the site, that includes companies that export frozen seafood.

The FDA released an advisory advising distributors and sellers to dispose of the goods and not sell it, although the found amount was far below the authority's action threshold. They noted that the amount of Caesium-137 it had detected would not pose an immediate risk to consumers.

The FDA explained: “The main impact on health of concern following longer term, repeated low dose exposure (for example through eating of contaminated products or liquid over a period) is an elevated risk of cancer, caused by harm to DNA within body cells.”

Widespread Contamination and Health Checks

Radioactivity scans showed at least 22 plants in the industrial zone were contaminated. The Indonesian taskforce did not name the 21 additional production facilities, but said they would immediately receive cleanup procedures conducted by the country's atomic energy agency.

A senior official declared that people residing in highly contaminated areas would be moved until the location was cleaned, emphasizing that the well-being of the residents was the “main concern”.

Medical authorities also performed examinations on local workers and people located close to the manufacturing estate, finding nine individuals who tested positive for exposure to Caesium-137. They were referred to a medical facility before being allowed to go back.

Decontamination and Isolation Plans
