England to Begin UEFA Euro 2028 Quest at the Etihad Stadium

England’s men’s team will commence their UEFA Euro 2028 campaign at the Etihad Stadium, on the condition that they attain the relatively straightforward entry for a tournament taking place in the majority of the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

The Etihad Stadium has not staged an England men’s game since eight years ago, when the visitors were beaten 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is highly likely to stage the England side for their first match on Saturday 10 June 2028.

England are set to play their final two group matches at Wembley, but, if they top their group, their last-16 tie would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Placing second would mean starting the knockouts at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Competition Opening and Rally

The tournament was unveiled at an ceremony in central London on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were heckled as they approached the location by approximately 50 protesters, who demanded the Israeli team to be expelled from the sport because of the conflict in Gaza.

Banners were raised with messages stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators called out: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Timeline

The opening game of the European Championship will be held at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a fixture that will feature the Dragons if they secure a place.

The national stadium will host both semi-finals and the championship match, which will be held on a Sunday in July 2028 with a kick-off time at 5pm.

It is anticipated that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to family audiences and help connect with a more diverse set of viewers.

Qualifying Teams

The Republic of Ireland are due to play their first game at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would play similarly at the national stadium of Scotland.

Each host nation’s squad will take part in the preliminary stage; two guaranteed slots will be reserved for any that miss out on the tournament through the standard process.

Stadiums and Elimination Phase

The Birmingham venue and The North London arena round out the nine tournament locations. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals held at the national stadium of each host.

The draw for the qualifiers will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a venue city last year when it became clear the Belfast stadium could not be redeveloped in time, on December 6, 2026.

Tournament Vision

“The event will be a competition for the fans and a festival of everything we love about the game – its passion and ability to foster unity.”

Over 3 million passes, a all-time high for a UEFA European Championship, are expected to be made available to supporters.
