A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country struggling with entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Authorities reported the 40-year-old media personality was accosted by three suspects, one of whom opened fire on him before fleeing on foot.
The reason of the attack remains unclear and no suspects have been apprehended have been made, police said.
Law enforcement said that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a location near the Carlton Centre.
He had devoted time at the property managing the installation of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by unidentified individuals, as per local media.
"Authorities believe the man was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before running from the location on foot," a police statement stated.
Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a man with dreadlocks and dressed in what appeared to be a security uniform opening fire on Stock before making his escape.
The DJ tried to run away after he was wounded but fell down a short distance away.
Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and nothing was taken during the attack.
Crucial forensic evidence, like cartridges, were found at the scene.
Officials are asking anyone who saw the event who may have seen the suspects to contact them.
"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the shooting, and officers have been attempting to locate them to establish their location," added an official.
His sister, a close relative, stated the family was struggling to process his death.
"I am devastated. I cannot express the pain," she stated.
"Everyone understood he was a champion for numerous individuals. He was a fearless commentator about topics not many people were ready to tackle. This is a profound tragedy."
She urged the citizens to not sharing explicit content from the incident, explaining this was an deeply traumatic time, above all for Stock's three sons.
Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that premiered on a South African digital satellite entertainment channel.
In addition to his work in broadcasting, Stock was active in various entrepreneurial pursuits, including protective services, supplying VIP protection services and securing prestigious gatherings across South Africa.

In a release, the network he worked for said Stock was known for his charisma, warmth and quick humor, adding that his legacy "will live on".
South Africa, the region's leading economy, has one of the globally elevated rates of violent death, exacerbated by robberies and organized criminal activity, with some dozens of citizens murdered daily in a recent six-month period, according to police data.
