The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.
A brand new six-episode season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."
The last series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.
The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a offender.
However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."
He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.
Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."
"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."
Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.
Broadcasters has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.
The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.
However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
