England have chosen a twelve-player selection just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a unexpected spot.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the visiting team will wait until the day of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch suit four seamers or the addition of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are included in the selected squad, indicating there are no concerns about either pace bowler’s fitness.
The other seamers complete the attack, with the latter most likely to be omitted if Bashir enters the final team.
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a venue that has staged five past matches.
In those games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken 29, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
On a ground renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers is still the more likely decision.
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to offer some slow bowling while additionally bolstering the lower order.
However McCullum has chosen to stick with Bashir, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” adding that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
