The Chainsaw Man Film Dominates Domestic Box Office in Debut Weekend

Has Sony done it again? In the wake of the box office performance of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in in excess of $600 million worldwide, the latest Chainsaw Man film has reached beyond the $100M milestone internationally, attaining a worldwide gross of $108 million in its opening frame. This feature beat out Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its second weekend in theaters, as well as Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring the talented Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).

Strong Domestic and Global Results

The work of Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a direct continuation of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It grossed over $18 million in the U.S. after a strong $5.2 million Saturday earnings and $4.5M Sunday. Overseas, the animated by MAPPA film earned nearly $15 million across 46 Sony markets, bringing its global earnings to over $60 million through Sony distribution ($43.1M abroad, $18.2 million domestic). Official totals are still pending from Sony its final earnings figure.

Benchmarks to Previous Successful Anime Films

Anime marketing agency White Box Entertainment noted in prior discussions, comparing the film’s projected performance to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which grossed thirty-four million dollars in the domestic market in 2022 and started with a nearly identical eighteen million dollars domestically. This movie's debut weekend is in line with that marker, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar global gross presently stands a bit short of the earlier film's $166.6 million overall box office. While it is improbable the Reze Arc movie will earn the numbers of blockbuster the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a significant success for the distributor.

Promotional Efforts Drive Success

The studio and its partner the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged community involvement to boost their dominance at the cinema for anime films. This film's marketing campaign began at the Anime Expo in LA in summer with a MAPPA presentation, special events, and photo opportunities with Pochita, then continued with a significant involvement at the New York Comic Con including behind-the-scenes footage, lotteries for fans, and additional MAPPA panels. Moreover, organizers held an exclusive fan screening for the public and content creators as well after the last day of the event.

What’s Next

This year marks a big year for Japanese animation, and for the company, which has one more animated movie premiering in 2025 in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
