The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
