During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this charming family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
