President Trump revealed on the weekend that he has extended an invitation the family of a National Guard member fatally shot last week to visit the White House.
He added that he conversed with her parents and they were âdevastatedâ.
Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was fatally shot in a shooting on Wednesday in DC.
Her fellow service member, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four years old, continues receiving treatment in critical condition.
Gatherings across the state have been held in their remembrance.
The president said heâs talked about a meeting at the presidential residence for the families of both members of the state Guard.
âI said: âWhen youâre prepared, because thatâs a hard experience, come to the White House. Weâre going to honor Sarah,â the president addressed reporters. âAnd similarly with Andrew, no matter the outcome.â
Mourners gathered over the weekend at the high school in the state to honor Sarah.
Both the soldiers had been fulfilling duties with the West Virginia National Guard as part of Trumpâs national effort to assist law enforcement in the capital.
âShe was the individual that instructors desired. She carried herself with calm resilience, a contagious smile and a upbeat demeanor that lifted those around her,â the principal, the leader of Beckstromâs alma mater, informed the press. âShe was sweet, caring and always eager to support those in need.â
Funeral plans for Beckstrom are still being arranged.
Officials have charged a twenty-nine-year-old individual from Afghanistan with a charge of murder and charges of attempted murder while carrying a weapon.
The tragedy led the Trump administration to halt asylum applications and temporarily stop granting visas to holders of Afghan passports.
The airman, a resident of the city, started his military career in 2019 and is a 2019 graduate of Musselman high school, as reported by the news agency.
He remains under medical supervision and is âin a critical fightâ, the stateâs governor Patrick Morrisey said on a news program.
The stateâs top lawyer Pam Bondi informed the program that she planned to speak to Wolfeâs family.
Beckstrom, from Summersville, graduated from Webster County High in mid-2023 and joined the military shortly after, working as a military police officer with excellence, as stated by the West Virginia National Guard.
âShe had a lot of compassion and she certainly had bravery,â the governor addressed the crowd at the service. âThough her life lasted far too short, she has made an impact thatâs going to be remembered always.â
