The Princess of Wales's Yearly Yuletide Service of Carols Honours Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The sizable congregation will hear a blend of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from stars like award-winning actors.

Centred Around Kindness and Compassion

The central message of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Attending the event are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who established a foundation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a terminally ill child.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often discreetly and without words, and without any expectation or recognition, make an remarkable change to the circumstances of individuals," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the concert.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The princess has been making her own gradual return to official duties subsequent to her illness and medical care, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Music and Opportunity

Guests arriving at the Abbey can listen to young musicians aided by the charitable trust Future Talent, co-founded by the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of instrumental training.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been supported by the charity, with funding assisting with instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "incredible" to be playing at the evening's event.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who performs on the brass instrument, will also be at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Within the audience will be people from various age groups.

That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, recipient of a youth community award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to raise money for food banks.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been festooned with specially made wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

The musical lineup includes recording artist Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the perfect culmination."

This annual carol service will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
