Generational striker Erling Haaland earns an opportunity in his first major tournament in the upcoming season, after leading Norway to the World Cup.

Additionally, the 25-year-old Manchester City striker accomplished it through sensational style, netting 16 goals in eight World Cup qualifiers - scoring in every match in each of those matches.

That makes him the top scorer in 2026 World Cup qualifying in any continent.

And his squad's 4-1 win in Italy on Sunday, where Haaland scored twice, means they will be participating in next summer's World Cup in North America.

Haaland stated post-game: "I'm happy, but more relieved. There's significant pressure and factors, and I feel it. But it's exciting."

This marks just their fourth World Cup, and their initial international competition since Euro 2000.

The Crucial Role Did Haaland Play?

Haaland's goalscoring record for Norway is nothing short of phenomenal.

He has registered 55 goals in 48 matches for his country.

Additionally he is just the sixth footballer ever, and the first in 53 years, to net 50 strikes in fewer than 50 caps.

The nation's former highest scorer was 33-goal Jorgen Juve, who kept that distinction for nine decades.

Throughout these preliminary games he registered 16 finishes - in eight games - plus two setup passes.

This represents twice the goals tally any other player has scored in Europe.

He remains the highest scorer in these preliminary games in any continent, even in regions where squads compete double the matches.

Over a year has gone by since Haaland most recently didn't net in a international appearance.

Squad Contribution Complementing Haaland

However, it's not only about Haaland.

Captain Martin Odegaard, 26, has more assists than any other player in European qualifying - seven setups.

The London club's midfielder has made 67 appearances for Norway since making his debut at the young age of 15.

"Merge Haaland's accomplishments with the fact that in this period we also have Martin Odegaard," stated an analyst.

We're a country of five million citizens and we possess both the top forward and I'd suggest the best playmaker, certainly one of the top creators, in the English top flight.

Historical Importance of World Cup Spot

For the first time in decades Norway fans will experience the pleasure of cheering their national side in worldwide event.

Their nation competed in the World Cups in 1998, 1994 and 1938, and the 2000 European Championship.

Erling's dad, Alf Inge Haaland, played at the 1994 tournament.

The striker has mentioned before exceeding his dad represented a major professional goal for him.

"Norway will not win the World Cup," Haaland Jr told a major publication in recent months.

Dodging Historical Omission

Haaland heading to next summer's World Cup with Norway means he avoids his name going on the roster of legendary footballers who didn't participate in the tournament.

Three Ballon d'Or winners didn't succeed to participate in the global tournament.

The Liberian legend, who claimed championships with multiple European clubs, represented Liberia - who have never reached a World Cup.

Iconic Manchester United winger the footballing genius, viewed by plenty as a true legend of the game, was a Ulster footballer during the mid-century period when they couldn't secure qualification.

Madrid superstar the footballing pioneer represented three nations - Argentina, Colombia and Spain - but never got to a World Cup with any national team.
