New research suggests that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
