Walmart Implements Purchase Limits on Pokémon Trading Cards

As a notable development, Walmart has begun implementing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can buy during one shopping trip. This policy officially takes effect starting November 5th, according to a company memo shared with employees.

Tackling Reseller Problems

While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that depicted a customer buying a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video received significant criticism for permitting the large-scale transaction to go through.

Policy Details and Potential Loopholes

The updated guideline states that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card packs or boxes each time they enter. However, the wording has raised questions due to its lack of clarity. What exactly counts as a "box" is not defined, and whether someone could still purchase five premium Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.

Additionally, since the limit is tied to each visit, theoretically a determined scalper could make multiple trips—buying five items each time—to accumulate large quantities over several hours.

The Scalping Phenomenon

To most players, this approach might seem excessive, yet for resellers, it's standard practice. In recent years, scalpers have significantly added to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.

Some resellers aim to resell sealed items at a markup, while others hunt for rare cards that can command sky-high values. As an example, a specific Mega Evolution card in recent releases has been listed for over $800 in online marketplaces.

Upcoming Releases

The new rule aligns with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, scheduled for November 14th. Early listings already show premium cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex listed for nearly $1,500, highlighting the ongoing demand and potential scalper target.

With any luck, Walmart's restrictions will curb mass buying and improve availability for genuine collectors and casual players as well.
